Industrial Gas Detection and Alarm Systems

Situations that occur as a result of the concentration of gases used in the industry, produced during manufacturing or in storage areas at higher levels at the risk limits create a risk in terms of worker health and workplace safety, and cause damage to the business and products. Platinum technology engineers offer customized solutions for your business to identify these risks caused by industrial gases and to evacuate them before the risk grows. The resulting risks and their consequences are completely different for each gas and business.

'' How many detectors do I need? And where can I find them? '' Two of the most frequently asked questions about gas detection systems, and are probably the two most difficult answers. Unlike other types of safety-related detectors, such as smoke detectors, the location and quantity of detectors required in different applications are not clearly defined. Only the right placement and product selection will be made with field risk analyzes and experiences.

For the detection and measurement of flammable gases or Oxygen, standards such as EN 60079-29-2 and others regarding the selection, installation, use and maintenance of the instrument are available. For example, international codes such as the National Electrical Code (NEC) or the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC) application can be used in situations. In addition, certain regulatory bodies have published specifications, giving minimum gas detection requirements for specific applications.

These references are useful, but they fall short in most applications, so the focus should be on business-specific risk analysis and solutions rather than a very general application. The placement of the detectors should be determined with the advice of experts with gas distribution expert knowledge, together with the knowledge of operating engineers, Platinum Technology engineers, Occupational health and safety experts and security personnel.

Lists of the gases used in the business should be made and Detectors should be installed in the environments where they are most concentrated, at a height suitable for the structure of the gases and at the points where the possibility of gas condensation is the highest. Places requiring the most protection in an industrial facility would be around gas boilers, compressors, pressure storage tanks, cylinders or pipelines. The areas most likely to leaks are filling or discharge valves, gauges, flanges, T-joints, etc. connections.

There are simple and quite often salient considerations that help to determine the detector location:

To detect gases lighter than air (e.g. Methane and Ammonia) you should use detectors, highly mounted and preferably a collection cone.

Detectors used to detect gases heavier than air should be installed at a lower level, air is heavier than gases (Butane and Sulfur Dioxide).

Depending on the natural or forced air currents as a result of the gas leak, the distribution of the gas may be in different places, this situation must be taken into account.

The operating conditions must be taken into account. Butane and ammonia, for example, should be used under the free pressure of a process line that is normally heavier than air but at a higher temperature so that the gas can fall rather than rise.

Detectors should be placed in a small way of high pressure parts to allow gas clouds to form. Otherwise, any gas leak can be detected.

While settling, conditions such as maintenance, external factors, etc. should be taken into consideration and automatic actions (scenarios) to be performed as a result of gas detection should be determined.
