History of the Key Box

The first lock box was invented more than 65 years ago by Supra founder Delbert Williams. Delbert, a real estate professional, was tired of chasing keys to show clients homes. He made a key box from a Yale® bike lock and sand cast aluminum container. Although very primitive, this lockbox served its purpose well—it eliminated the need for agents to search for listing keys to get into homes for sale. With this instant one-touch access, the first Supra keybox was born.

As our society has changed since 1955, when Delbert founded Supra, the industry has demanded more secure key boxes that also provide accountability. In 1990 the first electronic keybox – Supra Advantage Express – was introduced with overwhelming success.

With the release of the iBox in 2002, real estate agents were able to "beam" an infrared signal into the boxes. Bluetooth® wireless technology was added to the line in 2010 with the Bluetooth iBox, so that Bluetooth smartphones can communicate directly with the iBox BT without the need for additional hardware.

Supra switches and management systems

As lock boxes have evolved, so have the keys that open them. The original mechanical keys were quickly abandoned as they could be found and used by unauthorized persons if lost. In 1990 the battery-powered EntryCard communicated via voice tones over a telephone line, sending data to LENI, Supra's first data management system, for authorization. As EntryCard evolved into SupraCard and SupraKEY, LENI gave way to KIM and now SupraNET, the Internet-based portal for data management.

In 2000, the password for eKEY for Palm® was “Use your mobile phone as your key”. eKEY continues to evolve with the telecommunications industry, now available as a smartphone app for BlackBerry®, iPhone® and Android™ platforms. Hardware versions of electronic keys include DisplayKEY and ActiveKEY.
